Each year, on the 3rd May (and the days leading up to that date), the residents of the Santa Cruz neighbourhood in the old Town in Alicante decorate their houses and streets with crosses made from flowers. The spectacle and aroma is amazing! All this is in the hope of winning the prize for the best decorations. In addition, as usual in a Spanish fiesta, there is a programme packed full of events including parties, parades and fireworks! If you are in Alicante, this is a great opportunity to walk from Alicante marina, up through the Town Hall Square and into the narrow streets of Alicante old town to the picturesque Santa Cruz district.
Santa Cruz is the name of the old quarter of Alicante, on the slope of Benacantil mount and is famous for its year round floral displays. The cobbled streets, intimate plazas and picturesque balconies are a favourite haunt for visitors to Alicante.
But each year in May, Santa Cruz is transformed by magnificent floral crosses which are placed all along the streets, filling the air the scent of flowers. Local women decorate the crosses using thousands of fresh flowers, and Alicante Town Hall runs a competition, awarding prizes to the best displays.
There is music, food and drink and open air activities - definitely worth a visit if you are renting a villa in Alicante from Alicante Holiday Villas in May!
